As we welcome a new year, many of us look for ways to reset, set goals, and start fresh. At The Menninger Clinic, we invite you to make 2026 the Year of Better Mental Health, a year centered on small, intentional steps that nurture emotional well-being and connection.

Taking care of your mental health does not have to mean sweeping change. Often, it is consistent, everyday choices that make the biggest difference. Whether it is taking a deep breath before a stressful meeting, setting a boundary that protects your peace, or reaching out for support when you need it, better mental health begins with awareness and intention.

Reflecting on 2025

Before looking ahead, it is worth pausing to reflect on the past year. What moments or habits brought you calm, confidence, or joy? What challenges pushed you to grow, and what would you like to handle differently moving forward?

Reflection is a powerful mental health practice. According to the American Psychological Association, self-efficacy and awareness help people understand what influences their behavior, which in turn supports better coping and communication. Taking time to notice what worked well in 2025 can help guide your goals for the year ahead.

Setting Intentions, Not Just Resolutions

Resolutions often focus on doing more. Intentions, however, focus on doing better. Instead of aiming for perfection, consider what actions will make your days feel more balanced and meaningful. That might mean:
  • Prioritizing rest and recovery instead of overcommitting
  • Scheduling time to connect with friends or family
  • Practicing gratitude, even for small wins
  • Seeking therapy or support before you feel overwhelmed or out of control.
At Menninger, we know that mental health growth happens one choice at a time. Through our blogs, social media, and newsletters this year, we will share ideas, tools, and encouragement to help you take manageable steps toward better mental health.

“Improving mental health starts with giving ourselves the same compassion we so easily offer to others,” says Patricia Daza, PhD, ABPP, “Grace, patience, and consistency are the real foundations of change which we prioritize in our treatments.”

Showing Yourself Grace in the New Year

It is easy to be kind to others but hard to be kind to ourselves. The truth is no one can sustain improvement without rest and self-compassion. If this year brings challenges, remember that setbacks are part of progress. Each day is a chance to start again.

At The Menninger Clinic, we believe mental health care is not only about treatment but also about prevention and community. The Year of Better Mental Health is our shared commitment to growth, reflection, and care

Throughout 2026, we encourage you to join us in making mental health a daily priority. One step, one choice, one moment at a time.
