The Menninger Clinic ranks ninth in national survey of best psychiatric hospitals
HOUSTON, TX—(July 16, 2009)
For the 19th consecutive year, The Menninger Clinic, Houston, has ranked in the top 10 among psychiatric hospitals in U.S.News & World Report’s annual America’s Best Hospitals. This year Menninger ranks ninth and is the only psychiatric hospital in Texas among the top 10 and one of three hospitals ranked for psychiatry in southern states.
Board-certified psychiatrists nationwide are asked to list the five psychiatric hospitals in the U.S. they consider best for the treatment of difficult cases. Psychiatry is one of five medical specialties measured solely on reputation among physicians surveyed nationwide. Psychiatric hospital ratings include the annual survey results from a three-year period.
“We have carried forward the value of putting patients first throughout our 84-year history. Our clinical staff enjoys working with patients who have complex mental illness. Our patients come from across the country so we are grateful that psychiatrists count on Menninger to treat their patients,” said Ian Aitken, president and CEO of The Menninger Clinic.
“During this economic recession, we are forging ahead to meet our goals with research to improve our treatments, growing our services, building alliances and continuing to train mental health professionals,” Mr. Aitken added.
Menninger specializes in treating adolescents and adults who have a difficult-to-treat psychiatric disorder that may also be complicated by an addiction or other co-occurring psychiatric disorders. A new teen day treatment program, adolescent assessment service and inpatient stabilization service have been added in the past year.
Mr. Aitken said, “We also have adapted our plans to build a new hospital close to the Texas Medical Center to take advantage of lower construction and labor costs. We are making a push to raise philanthropic funds needed to begin construction in early 2010 so we can further enhance the patient care for individuals experiencing onset of or recurring severe psychiatric symptoms.”
The new Menninger location is less than 10 minutes from the Texas Medical Center near South Main and South Post Oak.
