John O'Neill, LCSW, LCDC, CSAT
Director of Addiction Services, The Menninger Clinic
John O’Neill holds a master’s degree in social work from Arizona State University, is a licensed clinical social worker and chemical dependency counselor, as well as a certified sexual addiction therapist and critical incident stress-debriefing counselor. In addition, he has been approved as a clinical supervisor by the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners.
O'Neill has five years of experience at The Menninger Clinic as director of the Menninger Professionals in Crisis Program and now as the Director of Addiction Services. Among his specialty areas are chemical addictions; gambling addictions; the impact of addictions on professionals, including athletes; sexual compulsivity; technology overload; and emotional stressors for executives and high-functioning professionals.
In the past 20 years, O’Neill has developed and presented more than 50 programs in such subjects as sexual addictions, family dynamics, trauma, and addictions and co-occurring disorders. He also has written or contributed to articles on addictions, families and co-occurring disorders for the American Bar Association Assistance Program, Houston Chronicle, Houston Medical Journal, Denver Post, WebMD, New York Times and other publications. O’Neill has also appeared and been heard on ESPN Outside the Lines, Fox News, National Public Radio and KTRH Radio.
Prior to coming to Menninger, O’Neill was director of the Authority Clinical Services for the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County, where he was responsible for three departments: Utilization Management, Continuity of Care and Network Development. He previously worked as an employee assistance program counselor, medical social worker and in student affairs at Arizona State University. He spent three years providing mental health and addictions services to a major league baseball team and six minor league teams. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Arizona Sate University and at local community colleges in the Houston area.
