Adolescent Treatment Program Day Hospital
The Menninger Adolescent Treatment Program Day Hospital is designed to assist families whose teens are struggling with their mental health and do not require the intensity of a 24-hour hospital. In many cases, teens in the day hospital have been unable to make progress in a regular outpatient care setting.
We provide expertise and interventions to treat teens with a wide variety of diagnoses, including mood disorders, depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance use/abuse, self-harm issues (eating and cutting) and suicidal thoughts. This day treatment (or partial hospital) program provides:
- A safe, stabilizing, growth environment
- Transition from more or less intensive treatment
- Collaborative relationship with the family and referring clinician
- Cost-effective treatment solution
- Assessment if needed
Teens may admit on weekdays directly to the day hospital or following completion of The Clinic's inpatient assessment and/or treatment program. The treatment team recommends the family and patient make a minimum six-week commitment to the day hospital program to capitalize on the benefits of skill building and therapies.
Programming includes:
- Three to four psychoeducational, skill-building and process-oriented groups daily
- Weekly individual and family therapy
- Separate individual and group therapy for substance abuse or addictive behaviors (such as self-harm or eating issues)
- Twice weekly team meetings regarding the teen's treatment
- Weekly meetings with a child and adolescent psychiatrist
- Multifamily group programming for parents, focusing on issues related to addictions, communications and relationships
- Three hours of academic tutorials in either small groups or individual time with a certified teacher. Teachers work closely with each teen's home school so that the family does not have to dis-enroll the youth from school while he or she is participating in the Menninger day treatment program.
- Close collaboration with outpatient treatment providers, involving them in our diagnostic conferences and transition planning back to outpatient care
Because the programming involves the parents, families from outside the Houston area are asked to temporarily reside in the city during the teen's stay in the day hospital.
The cost of housing and all arrangements are the responsibility of the family. Nearby short-term apartment housing options with all furnishings and flexible stays are available to meet the needs of families participating in the day hospital. We suggest contacting a local provider The Clinic has done business with for more than five years. To learn more about short-term housing information, contact:
