Family involvement
Visitation, phone calls & mail
When approved by the primary clinician, visitors are allowed during visiting hours or during hours outside normal visiting hours. The purpose is to help the patient anticipate what the visit will be like and how to make it as positive and beneficial as possible.
Visitors are expected to check in and out at the nurses’ station. Daily visiting hours are:
- 11:30 am to 1 pm
- 5 to 6:30 pm
A phone is available in each patient room. The phones in the main lounge are also available except when calls would interfere with scheduled activities. No cell phones or PDA phones are permitted. To make long-distance calls, plan to use a calling card or to call collect. Calls cannot be charged to the patient’s hospital account.
The treatment team may determine that the patient not have access to a room phone. Then nursing staff will monitor the patient’s calls in the main lounge.
Program policy does not permit personal computers, laptops or palm computers.
Mail is delivered and picked up twice daily Mondays through Fridays at the unit. Individual mailboxes are provided by the nurses’ station. Menninger sells stamps and shipping services for packages.
USA Today and the Houston Chronicle are delivered to the program daily.
