Brain Health

Questions about your brain health can arise during any phase of life. Treatable conditions may affect your performance in school or at work, your relationships and your own well-being.

If you’re concerned about the functioning of your brain, our brain health assessment – also called a neuropsychiatric or neuropsychological assessment – can help determine if you have an underlying medical issue that’s affecting your health.

This comprehensive, 4.5-day assessment of the medical, psychological and social components that affect wellness can uncover the underlying issue and, more importantly, lead the way to early intervention and treatment.

Call us today at 713-275-5400 and schedule your brain health assessment.

Who Benefits from a Brain Health Assessment

Bodies – and brains – change as we age. Depending on how your brain changes, you may experience changes in your temper, mood, sleep, energy level, pain, memory or even behaviors that are out of the ordinary, such as risk taking or overspending.

If you’re troubled by any changes like these, our brain health assessment can help determine if they are the result of an unexpected issue within the brain, or if an underlying psychiatric issue is the cause. Once that question is settled, the team can offer recommendations for care or treatment to help you in the next phase of your journey.

What We Offer

At Menninger, we assemble a team of specialists, including a neuropsychiatrist, to take a close look at your brain’s health in addition to determining if other symptoms may be contributing to your current situation. The team collaborates with your family to get valuable input about their observations of and experiences with you. The team also collaborates with health professionals who are familiar with your circumstances.

A full medical history is gathered by a physician, and comprehensive neuropsychological testing is completed by a board-certified psychologist. A licensed therapist meets with you and your family to assess social and environmental stressors. In addition, the team requests appropriate lab work, genetic testing for optimal medication, neuroimaging and EEG or sleep study.

Our staff compiles the entire assessment schedule, making this a hassle-free process. All assessments and tests can be completed, evaluated by the specialists and shared with you and family within one week at Menninger. (All assessments begin on Mondays and conclude on Fridays.)

Together, you, your family and our specialists explore causes for the changes in your health and behavior. At the end of the week, the team shares its findings with you and your family. It will also share a full written report that includes a definitive diagnosis and recommendations for next steps for treatment.

During previous brain health assessments, which are also referred to as neuropsychiatric and behavioral neurology assessments, the team has diagnosed such health conditions as:
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) from falls, accidents and sports injuries
  • Mood disorders like depression
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Seizure disorders
  • Executive functioning issues
  • Dementia and Alzheimer's disease
  • Lewy body dementia
  • Frontotemporal dementia
  • Brain masses
  • Thought disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Vascular disorders
  • Brain injury due to alcohol or drug use
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Nutritional deficiency
