Comprehensive Addictions Assessment

Clear insight into substance use and the support needed for lasting change.

Substance use, behavioral addictions, can affect every part of a person’s life, from emotional well-being to relationships, work, and physical health. When you are unsure about the severity of these behaviors or what kind of help is needed, a comprehensive evaluation can bring clarity and direction.

Led by an addiction psychiatrist, the Comprehensive Addictions Assessment at the Menninger Assessment Center delivers the same interdisciplinary, evidence-based Comprehensive Assessment with an additional focus on alcohol and substance use for individuals seeking treatment primarily for substance use. Our goal is to help individuals and families understand what is happening and identify the most effective next steps for recovery.

Who We Serve

This assessment is recommended for individuals who:
  • Are concerned about their alcohol or substance use
  • Feel their behaviors are becoming harder to control
  • Are unsure whether they meet criteria for a substance use disorder
  • Have co-occurring mental health symptoms such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or mood changes
  • Need guidance on treatment options, levels of care, or recovery planning
  • Have completed treatment before but feel stuck or unsure how to move forward
  • Want a professional, compassionate evaluation before making decisions about care
Families and referring clinicians often seek this evaluation when they need a clearer picture of how substance use is affecting someone they care about.

What the Assessment Includes

Every evaluation is tailored to the individual’s needs and situation, but generally includes:
  • psychiatric evaluation focused on addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Review of addiction history, patterns, triggers, and impacts on daily functioning
  • Screening for trauma, mood disorders, anxiety, or other contributing conditions
  • Consultation with addiction specialists
  • Review of past treatments, medications, and recovery attempts
  • Education about substance use disorders and behavioral addictions
  • Recommendations for the appropriate level of care, including therapy, medication, coaching, or residential services when needed
This assessment provides clarity about where someone is on their recovery journey and what support can help them move forward.
