Comprehensive Mental Health Assessment

A clearer understanding and a personalized path forward.

When symptoms feel confusing, overwhelming, or difficult to diagnose, a comprehensive evaluation can bring clarity and direction. The Comprehensive Mental Health Assessment at The Menninger Clinic Assessment Center provides a full, interdisciplinary understanding of a person’s emotional, cognitive, and behavioral health.

Designed for adults, young adults, and adolescents, this assessment helps individuals and families make informed decisions about treatment by providing answers, insights, and clear next steps.

Our team combines compassionate, whole-person care with academic-level expertise through our affiliation with Baylor College of Medicine. Every evaluation is personalized, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based practice.

Who We Serve

A Comprehensive Mental Health Assessment may be recommended for individuals who:
  • Have symptoms that are difficult to understand or diagnose
  • Have tried treatment without meaningful improvement
  • Feel stuck or unsure what kind of care they need
  • Are experiencing new or worsening emotional, cognitive, or behavioral concerns
  • Need clarity about co-occurring issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or attention-related symptoms
  • Have complex life circumstances that make treatment planning challenging
  • Want a full diagnostic picture before making decisions about ongoing care
Families and referring clinicians often choose this evaluation when a deeper, more integrated understanding is needed.

Comprehensive mental health assessments can benefit a wide range of ages, including children 7 years and older.

What the Assessment Includes

Your assessment is completed by an interdisciplinary team that may include psychiatrists, psychologists, neuropsychologists, social workers, nurses, and specialty consultants. While each evaluation is personalized, it typically includes:
  • A psychiatric evaluation
  • Psychological and cognitive testing
  • Clinical interviews
  • Behavioral observations
  • Review of medical, developmental, and family history
  • Consultation with specialty providers as needed
  • Collaboration with families and referring clinicians (with permission)
The result is a complete picture of how symptoms, experiences, strengths, and stressors are working together and what they mean for next steps.

What You Can Expect

We aim to make the process comfortable, supportive, and transparent. While each person’s assessment plan is tailored to individual needs, you can expect:

A warm, guided introduction
You and your family (when appropriate) will meet with members of your assessment team to share your concerns, goals, and history.

A structured schedule

Over the course of four and a half days of coordinated appointments, you’ll participate in testing, interviews, and specialty consultations designed to understand your full clinical picture. Your family may also be asked to participate if they are available.

Clear communication throughout
Your team will keep you informed about what each step means and why it is important.

A detailed set of findings
Once the evaluation is complete, your team provides a clear explanation of the results, including diagnostic impressions and how different factors may be contributing to symptoms.

Actionable recommendations
You will receive comprehensive and personalized recommendations that you can use anywhere, whether you continue your care with Menninger or another provider. These may include treatment options, medication considerations, therapy approaches, and school or workplace accommodations.
