Houston is a rare combination of international sophistication and friendly Texas charm. The culture is welcoming and inclusive. It’s a study in contrasts – some of the world’s top medical and research facilities, world-class universities, award-winning performing and visual arts – all combined with welcoming residents and some of the best barbecue and Tex-Mex you’ve ever tasted.
Houston’s cost of living is one of the lowest among the nation’s major metropolitan areas, but its standard of living is high. That can translate into lower rent and home prices – as well as gas, utility and grocery bills. If you’re searching for a home or apartment, the choices are many and include high-rises, midtown lofts, suburban family homes and renovated bungalows.
Our climate is subtropical, meaning mild winters and plenty of sunshine. You can get outside and play just about every day of the year. It rarely snows, and the average high temperature year-round is 79 degrees.
And, there’s plenty here to keep you busy when you’re not working. Houston is one of the few American cities with permanent ballet, opera, symphony and numerous theater companies playing year round. The diverse cultural scene includes world-class museums and lively festivals.
Don’t forget our professional sports teams, which include Texans NFL football, Astros baseball, Rockets NBA basketball and Dynamos soccer. If you’d like to be more than a spectator, Houston offers miles of jogging and bicycling trails, as well as deep-sea fishing and surfing 50 miles away on the Gulf Coast.
