The Menninger Clinic announced a new partnership with the nonprofit Home Base that will significantly expand mental health care access to Texas veterans and their families. Home Base is dedicated to healing the invisible wound of war in veterans, service members, their families and families of the fallen. With this partnership, sponsored by the nationally regarded Blue Angels Foundation, and local community leaders from the Texas Veteran Coming Home Alliance, Home Base and Menninger are proud to offer the first private-sector clinic in Houston offering mental health care to warriors and their families at no out of pocket cost to them.
“The Greater Houston area is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the country, which means the need for access to mental health services often outweighs available resources,” said Armando Colombo, president and CEO of The Menninger Clinic. “We are excited to collaborate with Home Base to improve access to high quality mental health care for veterans and their families.”
Through the partnership, Home Base will train Menninger clinicians in cultural competencies and specific considerations relevant to the care of veterans and their families. Menninger is home to world renowned clinicians who will utilize evidence-based, cognitive and behavioral therapies to treat conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, depression and co-occurring substance use disorders. Veterans can be referred to Menninger by Home Base and by the Veterans Administration (VA). In 2022, Menninger opened a new Outpatient Services Center that allowed the hospital to increase outpatient visits and expand partnerships for outpatient services such as the one with Home Base.
“We are honored to partner with Home Base and The Menninger Clinic to provide mental health services to veterans in Houston and our commitment to expanding support in Texas is unwavering. The Blue Angels Foundation embodies a strong national brand of trust and respect for our wounded warriors and their families, and our goal is to ultimately SAVE LIVES,” said Scott Kartvedt, a former Blue Angel and president of the Blue Angels Foundation.
“I know first-hand the toll that fighting for our country takes on the soldier and their families. At least 20 veterans die by suicide every day and one in three veterans experience the invisible wounds of war with many who struggle to find care that can fit their unique needs and experiences,” said retired General Jack Hammond, executive director, Home Base. “Through partnerships with high-quality mental health providers across the country, like Menninger, we are able to meet the growing need for innovative approaches to supporting the mental health of veterans and their families.”
“Home Base has provided lifesaving support and care to over 45,000 veterans and their families throughout the US. The expansion of the care through the partnership with The Menninger Clinic represents a significant step forward in our mission to expand life-saving care to veterans and their families in communities where the need is greatest,” said Michael Allard, chief operating officer of Home Base. “And all of this is made possible thanks to the support of a grateful nation, especially our partners at the Blue Angels Foundation and local community leaders from the Texas Veteran Coming Home Alliance.”
“The Texas Veteran Coming Home Alliance is grateful to the many donors who have helped make this day happen. Given the large veteran population in greater Harris County, the immense treatment capabilities available from our regional medical providers, and Houston's generous philanthropic community, we believe that the Home Base Clinic at Menninger is a natural fit for the City of Houston. We are also excited that the Clinic will be joining the many Houston-area organizations serving our veteran community and we will continue working to ensure that ALL veterans in the State of Texas are able to get the help they need to truly believe that they have come home," said Ted Dom and Matt Wareing, co-founders of Texas Veteran Coming Home Alliance.
