Rapid Targeted TMS

Menninger now offers Rapid Targeted TMS for adults in its Center for Brain Stimulation. This new and exciting service is available for both inpatients and outpatients.

What is Rapid Targeted TMS?

Rapid Targeted TMS is an accelerated TMS treatment that includes a functional MRI (fMRI) scan to more precisely pinpoint the location of a patient's dysfunction in their brain, which makes it possible to deliver highly targeted TMS based on each individual's brain functioning.

The rapid, or accelerated, treatment course consists of 10-minute sessions of TMS every hour for 10 hours over five days.

This is a well tolerated, safe treatment. Some of our clients have experienced minor headaches and fatigue.

Who Can Benefit from Rapid Targeted TMS

This treatment is ideal for individuals with:

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Unspecified depressive disorder
  • Persistent depressive disorder
  • Bipolar disorder I and II with depressive episodes

Effectiveness

The remission rate of depressive symptoms in published studies ranges from 50-90%.

Why Choose Menninger?

There are a number of reasons why you might turn to Menninger for Rapid Targeted TMS:
  • Other treatment facilities may offer accelerated TMS protocols and even use a MRI scan to help with targeting; however, very few offer both the full accelerated protocol and targeting based on a fMRI scan. The full protocol requires a device that is capable of administering this level of treatment.
  • The technology for obtaining the skills for processing fMRI scans is only found in a few highly specialized clinics like Menninger. Keep in mind that targeting based on non-fMRI methods cannot truly find the specific target for an individual. In addition, studies show that accelerated protocols without the full number of treatments or precise fMRI-based targeting have greatly reduced efficacy.
  • The Menninger Clinic is the only psychiatric hospital to offer Rapid Targeted TMS.
  • The team, led by Neil Puri, MD, medical director of the Center for Brain Stimulation, is very experienced and specially trained in delivering this treatment.

What to Expect

The first step involves getting a fMRI completed at Baylor College of Medicine, Menninger's academic partner, the week before treatment is scheduled to begin.

The second step is coming to Menninger's Center for Brain Stimulation for the course of treatment, which begins on a Monday and ends on a Friday. Clients will need to be on campus for 10 hours per weekday.

In between the hourly 10-minute sessions, you can rest, relax or lounge in the Center. Family members, partners and friends are welcome to accompany you.
